Ask the President: A Smart Mix of Mediums
Posted by: Amy Hooker, Director of Online Marketing Mar 20, 2009 0 Comments
Yesterday, a friend mentioned to me that The Nation, the Personal Democracy Forum and The Washington Times have teamed up to create a site called Ask the President. The site urges visitors to submit questions that they would like President Obama to answer. Site users can submit questions via text or video and can vote on which questions they like the best.
I like the way that Ask the President is combining the questions provided by the “average Joe” along with vetted journalism professionals—it’s a nice mix of consumer-generated media and traditional media. This type of forum polices itself, keeping the absurd and irrelevant questions on the fringes and letting truly insightful and engaging questions rise to the top. It also allows the questions to be delivered by folks who have the credentials to get in front of the President and the know-how to ask a follow-up question if given the chance.
I think we’ll see more of this marriage of consumer and professional journalism in the near future, as newspapers continue to struggle to remain relevant, and bloggers, tweeters, and Facebook aficionados continue to add their voices to the ongoing online conversation.
