Gov 2.0 Camp LA: Moving Gov 2.0 Forward

Posted by: Meagen Ryan, Director of Strategy Feb 09, 2010 2 Comments

It’s the little things that will move Gov 2.0 forward. Little things like pills, or more accurately, Pillbox. Pillbox, an online tool developed by David Hale at the National Library of Medicine, allows anyone to identify pills by their appearance.

Why is this a big deal? For many reasons. It’s a “prototype,” something not frequently found in government. It requires interagency and industry collaboration. It was developed with a small budget and borrowed resources. It was built using open source technology, and the open source community continues to contribute to its success. For all these reasons and more, Pillbox is a great example of Gov 2.0.

I got a glimpse of Pillbox at Gov 2.0 Camp LA. Like Pillbox, Gov 2.0 Camp LA was a little thing that will move Gov 2.0 forward. It was a weekend of discussion, new and renewed friendships, and more than a bit of fun. Here’s a roundup of what’s been said about it thus far:

Big Picture
For a great overview of the Camp, Sarah Granger at Personal Democracy Forum highlights the keynote addresses and summarizes the entire weekend.

Who’s Who
Adriel Hampton created a Twitter list of attendees. Lovisa Williams, the uber-talented wrangler of the Gov 2.0 Camp LA program, has a list of speakers.

The Long View
The first day started with history lessons from Cory Ondrejka and Antonio Oftelie, who reminded us that history has much to say about innovation, as Alex Howard wrote on Digiphile.

The Language of Gov
“Use hearts to change minds,” advised Billy Grundfest. His funny lunchtime session inspired more than a few attendees. Christina Gagnier was reminded that Gov 2.0 is about conversation, not code. Alex Howard looked at whether the public needs to know what Government 2.0 is in his thought piece, “On Language: Government 2.0, jargon and technology”.

Women in Government
Somewhat unintentionally, a lunchtime panel that happened to feature four women turned into a discussion on women in government, as Sarah Granger captures in her post on WomenCount.

Videos, Photos, and Other Fun Stuff

Thanks
Kudos to Alan Silberberg and Lovisa Williams , whose vision and hard work made the weekend possible. Thanks also to the speakers, planning committee, and sponsors.

Both Lovisa and Meagan killed themselves, because they believe in the promise of government 2.0 and they realized how much this event would contribute.

However, none of this would have happened without the vision and months of hard work by Alan Silberberg. From us lucky ones who were able to attend and the 50,000+ that watched the streaming video online: THANK YOU ALAN FOR A JOB VERY WELL DONE!
