Rock Creek Roundup (August 21 Edition)

In this week’s Rock Creek Roundup, we’ll talk about CIOs, Government 2.0, and a group of utilities that will make your social networking life even easier:
• Today’s government CIO will have to be comfortable with both security and innovation. CIOs understand the need for security, as exemplified in an article on FDA’s use of social media. It’s a few weeks old now, but a good read. Using FDA as an example, it outlines the challenges that government CIOs face as agencies clamor to use social media tools. Innovation, however, is now always part of a CIO’s paradigm. As Eric Brown says in his blog series on Innovation and The New CIO, “the New CIO has to have their finger on the pulse of popular culture, technology culture and academia to know where society is going, what technology is available now and in the near future and where technology is going in the long term.” Eric is talking about the corporate world, but that sentiment holds true for government as well.
• The phrase Gov 2.0 is one that has received a lot of buzz in both traditional and social media environments. But does it do the best job of capturing the essence of what is happening? And what does it really mean anyway? “Does it mean having a blog? Being on Facebook? Or just publishing your office’s phone number on a Web site?” asks Gadi Ben-Yehadu in this guest blog at the Huffington Post where he discusses what is Gov 2.0 and what isn’t.
• Even though they’re only 140 characters, Twitter messages have become an important communications tool among government employees, both for personal and professional uses. If you’re ready to gain more control of this powerful social networking tool, check out this list of valuable utilities that help you enhance your Twitter experience. My favorite is Twitpic—it’s an excellent way to easily share photos with other Twitter users.
• Speaking of valuable utilities, here’s a list of four Firefox social media extensions that you can’t live without. Whether you’re new to social media or a seasoned social media veteran, extensions like Yoono and PowerTwitter are extremely useful…unless of course you work for the agency within USDA that can now only use Internet Explorer.
