At the Gov 2.0 Summit, held this week in D.C., Challenge.gov launches, FCC seeks “citizen developers,” and data continues to dominate the Open Gov/Gov 2.0 discussion.

GSA and the White House continue their quest to connect government with citizens in innovative ways with this week’s launch of Challenge.gov. As Bev Godwin said in her appearance at Gov 2.0 Summit, “This is about bringing problem-solving communities together. Is not that what government as a platform really means?” For another take on how government might engage citizens, check out our interview with Dominic Campbell about using technology to connect government with social innovators via a model Dom calls “government as a partner.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and Managing Director Steve VanRoekel announced the release of a new set of APIs that will allow the agency to disseminate data in a way that can be used by developers. You can find these APIs at FCC.gov/Developer if you’re itching to mashup data with something FCC has to offer. In other exciting news, FCC announced that it will launch a new website by the end of this year in an effort to better serve the public and lose its distinction as one of the “worst websites in government.”

—What would Open Government be without data? Not much, it would seem from this week’s Gov 2.0 Summit. From Carl Malamud’s call to extend data democratization to Ellen Miller’s critique of USASpending.gov, data was the word of the conference and will likely be the central topic in this conversation for a long time to come.
